CITY OF OTTAWA REGULATIONS
SECONDARY UNITS:
A separate dwelling unit located in the same building as the principal dwelling in a detached dwelling, linked-detached dwelling, semi-detached, duplex, or townhouse.​
COACH HOUSE:
A separate dwelling unit that is subsidiary to and located on the same lot as the principal dwelling unit but is contained in its own building and may contain uses accessory to the principal dwelling.
​Bonus: "As of September 18, 2020, coach houses are exempt from Development Charges as per provincial legislation."
A lot with a principal dwelling may have up to two additional dwelling units comprised of:

Two separate dwelling units, located in the same building as the principal dwelling, or
-
One separate dwelling in the same principal dwelling & one coach house on the same lot.
Where permitted, the total number of units, including the principal unit, must not exceed three units.
